Should we pay $420 million to extend to Mark Clark Expressway?

This proposal would add two new bridges, at a cost of $420 million dollars, to Johns Island, just South of Charleston. The originial route of the Mark Clark was drawn some 30 years ago. Some people believe the road should be "finished." But state-of-the-art transportation modelling shows this excessively expensive leg of the bypass would do very little to solve congestion on major Charleston roads.

It is a prime example of how a misguided, indefensible road project, at breathtaking cost, can rise to the top of a region's priority list with no objective scrutiny. This is a classic example of individuals "asserting" the road is needed for hurricane evacuation and congestion relief without one shred of evidence that the road will do any such thing.

Everyone in South Carolina will be paying for this local road project. On June 30, 2006, the State Transportation Infrastructure Bank (STIB) voted to fund the construction of the Mark Clark extension.  To add insult to injury, the road will irreparabley damage John's Island, a rural sea island whose residents don't want the massive road. Charleston County released a report that showed the Mark Clark would increase development on John's Island by 20-40%.
