GLENN MCCONNELL EXTENSION WOULD DESTROY HISTORIC ASHLEY RIVER DISTRICT.
Dorchester County Council members hold the future of the Ashley River Plantation District in their hands. While members say they want to protect the Ashley River Plantation District they voted unanimously to support extending the Glenn McConnell Parkway through the district to connect with I-26 at Ridgeville. Residents of the Plantation District, the Historic Preservation Community, various area hunt clubs, churches and other community organizations are opposed to this road which would open more than 40,000 acres of woods and wetlands to sprawl. It would put a halt to all preservation efforts for the area that have been in the works for decades. County Council has also proposed to extend the McConnell Parkway even further, calling it the Orangeburg Loop, to serve as a by-pass to I-26. This is an enormous investment in a piece of infrastructure which may or may not provide an effective solution to that area's traffic problems. No one has any idea what such a road would do, since no traffic study has been completed. It is inappropriate to make a decision about this
sort of investment when no analysis has been done. Impacts on schools, rural
land, the county-wide transportation system and available funds must be taken
into account before a proposal of this magnitude can be legitimately
considered.
